    Literacy for Environmental Justice

    Mission

Literacy for Environmental Justice (LEJ) was founded in 1998 by passionate Bayview-Hunters Point youth who saw the environmental injustices, pollution, and health crises plaguing their neighborhood and envisioned a greener, healthier future for their community. Since then, LEJ has worked with and for the community to fight environmental injustices in Bayview-Hunters Point such as toxic pollution from the former Hunters Point Naval Shipyard; grown and planted 250,000+ native plants to restore local urban parklands such as Herons Head Park and Candlestick Point SRA for the health of the community and environment; introduced thousands of Bayview-Hunters Point school children to the wonders of nature right in their community through the Eco-Adventures program; and provided green job training, through the Eco-Apprenticeship program, for hundreds of underserved, local youth ages 18-25 who have gone on to environmental careers. Today, LEJ serves more than 1,200 youth and community members ann
