The Algebra Project Inc.
Mission
The Algebra Project helps students and teachers in schools and communities achieve levels of math literacy appropriate for economic, educational, and civic life in the 21st century. The ability to read, write, and reason with the principal symbol systems of mathematics - both algebraic and geometric - is a right all young people in the nation are entitled to and are capable of attaining. Teachers must be supported to develop their mathematical knowledge and instructional practices to ensure they can reach all of their students. Students need the opportunity to develop themselves and support each other in math literacy. The future of our society depends on not only reading and writing literacy, but also math literacy, as a foundation for full participation and empowered citizenship.
Vision
The Algebra Project works to ensure that every student in the United States has access to a high-quality mathematics education—one that equips them with the skills and confidence to participate fully in 21st-century civic and economic life. Our mission is to help schools and communities achieve math literacy at levels necessary for success in a modern, STEM-driven world. This work is more urgent than ever. The U.S. is facing a national crisis in math literacy. Per the 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), only 22% of 12th graders performed at or above the “Proficient” level in mathematics, or roughly 2.9 million seniors, out of 3.6 million, graduated without a foundational grasp of math. We aim for the United States to reach 90% proficiency for 12th grade mathematics NAEP scores in 10 years.
Goals
- 1.Math Makes Movement (M3), a national campaign to transform math literacy across the country. Math Makes Movement stands on the shoulders of our more than 40 years of work in this field. It brings our longstanding principles and practices to a broader audience through local organizing and a new digital infrastructure.
- 2.The Digital Learning Lab (DLL): Our Digital Learning Lab is an in-beta-development dynamic online platform that will give students, teachers, parents, and communities access to experiential math literacy resources, interactive forums, and organizing tools.
- 3.The Math Teacher Development Continuum (MTDC): The MTDC enhances elementary and secondary teachers’ mathematical content knowledge, providing a solid foundation for effective instruction. We work to broaden instructional practices, encouraging diverse and engaging teaching methods. Educators learn to create meaningful experientially-based learning activities for their students.
