Council of American Jewish Museums
Mission
THE MISSION OF THE COUNCIL OF AMERICAN JEWISH MUSEUMS IS TO STRENGTHEN, POSITION, AND CHAMPION AMERICA'S JEWISH MUSEUMS AS INVALUABLE PUBLIC AND JEWISH RESOURCES. ITS VISION IS A SOCIETY MADE MORE VIBRANT, INCLUSIVE, JUST, RESILIENT, AND UNDERSTANDING BY JEWISH MUSEUMS AND THEIR ALLIES.
Vision
We believe that American Jewish museums are indispensable public institutions—dynamic, human-centered anchors of culture and learning where history, creativity, and humanity meet. They hold unparalleled collections, evidence, and stories that illuminate Jewish resilience, diversity, and continuity, while enriching understanding of Jewish, American, and global history, including the Holocaust. Our vision is a future in which American Jewish museums serve as essential, public-facing resources—strengthening Jewish life, addressing the challenges of our time such as antisemitism and Holocaust education, and inspiring a more creative, multicultural, and resilient world. In partnership with CAJM and working collaboratively across the full museum field—Jewish, Holocaust, culturally specific, and general museums—our network of museums fosters learning, deepens public engagement, and expands what is possible for our collective future.
Goals
- 1.FORTIFY & LEAD - The evolution, transformation, and sustainability of Jewish museums with field-building work. CAJM will bolster its role in strengthening the field of American Jewish museums – working to make it more dynamic and contemporary, promoting a growth mindset, leveraging the field’s rich and varied resources, and inspiring new content and creativity.
- 2.Align and partner with museums and allied organizations across education, the arts, community building, and advocacy to strengthen Jewish museums and the communities they serve. Building on CAJM’s role as a forum for forward-thinking practice, we will invest in the talents essential to the Jewish museum field’s future.
- 3.Grow CAJM’s capacity to fulfill its mission, serve and partner with members, respond to unforeseen challenges, and model shared values for the field. Through stronger systems, strategic allies, and new talent and resources, CAJM will fortify and elevate Jewish museums within Jewish and American life.
