Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger
Mission
Since 1991, Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger (MSAH), a 501(c)(3) all-volunteer organization, has brought together Michigan’s sportsmen and sportswomen, licensed wild game processors, and hunger-relief organizations to address food insecurity with a unique and sustainable source of high-quality protein. MSAH coordinates the donation, professional processing, and distribution of legally harvested deer, transforming an abundant natural resource into nutritious venison for families facing hunger. The finished venison is distributed at no cost through food banks, food pantries, soup kitchens, and community organizations throughout Southeast Michigan and across Michigan. In connecting conservation with hunger relief, MSAH is the coordinator and bridge between the conservation hunting resources that creates a powerful cycle of community impact: hunters help manage Michigan’s deer population, processors contribute their expertise, and charitable organizations deliver nutritious food to those who need it most. This model not only helps fill a critical nutritional gap but also reduces food waste and ensures that a valuable natural resource becomes a source of nourishment for Michigan families.
Vision
The primary goal of this project is to increase access to nutritious, high-protein food for Southeast Michigan residents experiencing food insecurity, while also reducing food waste and supporting responsible wildlife management.
Goals
- 1.Over the next two years, MSAH's goal is to increase ground venison donations by 20% within Michigan. We will support this growth through increased hunter outreach, promotion of participating processors, and recognition and promotion of the sponsors whose financial support makes the program possible.
- 2.We will continue to build relationships with foundation, corporate, agricultural, conservation, and community sponsors whose financial support is essential to maintaining our processing and distribution network. We will also continue strengthening partnerships with hunger-relief organizations so that donated venison reaches communities where it is most needed.
- 3.We will strengthen MSAH’s capacity by securing additional foundation, corporate, business, and individual support to sustain and expand our donation and distribution system. We will clearly demonstrate how donor support increases our ability to fight food insecurity while supporting responsible deer management across Michigan.
