Silicon Valley Bicycle Exchange
Mission
Encouraging communities to choose bicycles for a sustainable future by: Creating access to affordable, healthy transportation: We provide refurbished, donated bicycles to people in need, ensuring equitable access to bicycle transportation and promoting healthier living and environmental responsibility Building cycling knowledge and confidence: We teach bicycle repair in a hands-on, diverse, respectful, and supportive environment. Fostering a culture of reuse and recycling: We divert donated bicycles and parts from landfills, extending the lifespan of these resources.
Vision
Silicon Valley Bicycle Exchange envisions a future where bicycles transform lives and communities by providing equitable access to sustainable transportation. Through education, waste reduction and partnerships with over 20 local organizations, we empower individuals with safe, reliable mobility while fostering environmental stewardship. As we build on decades of experience, 2025 marks a pivotal year of growth, innovation and deeper community impact—laying the groundwork for expanded programs, locational stability and lasting change.
Goals
- 1.We aim to strengthen community partnerships, enhance volunteer recruitment, and expand our donated bike collection program by utilizing new staff and tapping into volunteer interest. Goals include hosting 8 offsite repair events (half free), donating 900 bikes, and increasing helmet, lock, and light donations. We’ll launch two new programs to boost impact and grow sustainable fundraising efforts.
- 2.Over the next 5–10 years, we aim to expand across the Bay Area, secure ownership of our main facility, and strengthen community partnerships. Goals include 30% annual revenue growth, a $2M treasury fund, 20% yearly volunteer growth, and a 10% annual increase in community donations.
- 3.In 2025, SVBE will launch at least two new programs to boost visibility and engagement. The Mentor-in-Training program will guide volunteers toward becoming mentors. Partner rides with Western Wheelers will expand volunteer opportunities. Additionally, offering affordable retail bike services will help fill a community need for accessible bicycle repairs.
