Mission

TO PREVENT LANGUAGE EXTINCTION, WIKITONGUES FIGHTS FOR EVERY LANGUAGE TO BE CELEBRATED, RESPECTED, AND INSTITUTIONALLY SUPPORTED. WE INVEST IN LANGUAGE ACTIVISTS, ACCELERATE ENDANGERED LANGUAGE REVITALIZATION, AND DEFEND MULTILINGUALISM WORLDWIDE.

Vision

WIKITONGUES IS BUILDING A WORLD WHERE EVERY LANGUAGE IS CELEBRATED, RESPECTED, AND INSTITUTIONALLY SUPPORTED.

Goals

1.Slow the trend of language extinction: stripped to the studs, that means launching, growing, and sustaining revitalization projects for the majority of endangered languages. We track our progress toward that goal by measuring the quantity and quality of linguistic resources we safeguard and the number of language revitalization projects we help seed or grow.
2.Accelerate the fight for language rights: though language revitalization is a community-led process, governments play an important role by supporting or obstructing it. Therefore, any comprehensive approach to supporting linguistic diversity must move the needle on public policy. To engage the legal dimension of our work, we're publishing a report on the global state of language rights by 2027.
3.Expand language access in tech: Language revitalization is interdisciplinary. As more of the world gets online, and in light of recent growth of language models (‘AI’), technology is an increasingly important part of language revitalization, with a high barrier to entry. To reduce this barrier, at least 10% of the language revitalization projects we support will be focused on mother-tongue tech.
