The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
Legal Aid of NW TX (LANWT) helps low-income TX residents/groups. The COVID pandemic, 2021 Winter Storm Uri & loss of water & power all impacted clients/our service delivery model. During these crises, we continue to meet the legal needs of our clients in new & creative ways.
LANWT's 300+ staff worked from home with laptops, internet access, printers/scanners & related software. Offices were closed to walk-in applicants with minimal staff doing essential in-office tasks. Technology allowed phone & video mtgs. with applicants/clients, electronic signatures, remote access with Legal Aid Line phone system (LAL), & exponential growth of 24/7 online intake system. LANWT extended LAL hours to several evenings & Sat. as well.
Social media focused on relevant/emerging issues including new videos on some legal topics posted on Facebook to educate/answer questions. We partnered with other legal aids in an Eviction portal giving info, rental aid resources/legal help. We helped clients with technology for virtual court hearings while giving some access in our offices. In-person clinics were replaced by phone & virtual meetings to place cases with probono attorneys.
LANWT protocols ensured essential staff, in offices to meet clients, kept CDC protocols reducing risk/providing services to meet family needs. Pandemic drove increase in some problems: eviction, family stability, access to employment & benefits, family matters, domestic violence, custody issues, consumer & other issues. LANWT created its Eviction Assistance Program, placing attorneys/other staff in JP Courts with high # of eviction cases, serving poverty areas. LANWT provides legal info/help, & referrals to eviction diversion & rent projects to address issues of housing instability & stop homelessness.
LANWT started self-care training, providing resources to staff serving legal needs of clients & community to address personal issues of remote work, isolation, school aged children, & caring for family members.
