Urban Voices Project

Mission

ROOTED IN SKID ROW THROUGH MUSIC, COMMUNITY AND OPENHEARTED INCLUSION OF THE MOST MARGINALIZED MEMBERS OF SOCIETY, URBAN VOICES PROJECT AMPLIFIES ARTISTIC EXPRESSION TO IMPROVE WELL BEING, STRENGTHEN SOCIAL NETWORKS, AND INSPIRE INDIVIDUALS TO BE THEIR OWN BEST ADVOCATES.

Vision

To place music & singing community spaces in every medical and social service site across Los Angeles, to create community and a more comprehensive, holistic system for engaging individuals coping with the conditions of homelessness.

Goals

1.UVP is expanding within Skid Row Community Health Centers and the Los Angeles Public Library system to reach more individuals experiencing homelessness. UVP hosts two weekly programs at the LAPL Central Library and also offers a workshop at Saint Paul’s Church in Tustin (OC) on a bi-monthly basis. This year, we expect 3 new programs to be launched.
2.UVP is improving the facilitator training curriculum to build capacity for program expansion and develop the social-emotional skillset of our teaching artists. The training offers continuing education for music professionals, wellness practitioners, and community members interested in facilitating arts activities with vulnerable populations.
3.UVP plans to open a Skid Row Arts Wellness Center by 2028 to demonstrate the vital role of arts and culture in the Skid Row neighborhood, and to offset the displacement of low-income communities during efforts related to hosting the Olympics. The Skid Row Arts Wellness Center will be shared by organizations affiliated with the Skid Row Arts Alliance and used as an office and program space.
