Mission

The I Was Here project acknowledges the fundamental role enslaved Africans played in building America and empowers the descendants whose ancestors were key to the bedrock of our country. This is accomplished through a synthesis of art, voice, and technology that transforms public space to deepen and reshape our understanding of the concept of Nation Building.

Vision

The I Was Here Project is a call to memory, a reckoning with history, and an invitation to co-create a true narrative of America’s past.

Goals

1.IWH seeks to bring its signature "Invitation to Respond” workshops to new audiences. These gatherings create a space for participants to reflect on ancestry, identity, and community through guided writing, conversation, and culminating in spoken word performance.
2.IWH seeks to create installations that integrate student portraits and narratives into the visual and digital vocabulary of I Was Here in public spaces. These new works will create a powerful bridge between past and present, and a monument to the living legacy of those who laid the foundation of our country.
3.IWH seeks to expand its offerings to create a permanent presence for the project in various cities that includes the IWH Nationwide projection created by MAD Studios.
