Speaking Out Collective
Mission
Speaking Out Collective uses storytelling and story-making to spark the curiosity and imagination of children, educators and communities. Rooted in the arts, we question, create and reimagine narratives. We create tailored curricula, produce live performances and provide outreach programs and professional development using a toolbox of techniques that incorporate puppets, poetry, music, dance, art and more. We celebrate and create a culture where stories and questions uplift children and the community in becoming agents of change on topics such as fairness and ethics, race, identity, equity, mental health, community transformation and more.
Vision
We’re committed to dismantling systemic and racial inequities while infusing joy in learning by alleviating the barriers around arts engagement, participation and education. We meet youth, families, educators and communities right where they are, offering flexibility around what our learning and experiences will look like together.
Goals
- 1.We aim for children and community to know and speak the truth. Our Historical Truth Telling program reveals undocumented and silenced narratives in the Twin Cities. We explore mental health, BIPOC histories, environmental disparities and issues lived by children, families, elders and communities, providing stories and curriculum that directly reflect the communities we serve.
- 2.We aim to become a sustainable organization that regularly offers free programs, especially as funding and budgets decrease in the arts and education. Our core stakeholders live in impoverished communities and attend Title I schools. It's imperative that we increase our response to grassroots needs and requests with proven arts-based critical literacy techniques that foster dialogue and change.
- 3.Develop long-term (3-5 and 10-year) strategies with actionable long term goals to ensure longevity, while addressing realistic capacity. Identify increased earned revenue streams and fundraising opportunities, for example, to ensure multi-year employment of highly trained staff, develop succession planning, and provide annual COLAs to teaching artists, curriculum developers, and artists.
