BEYOND THE CHAIR CO
Mission
Beyond the Chair Co. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focused on the structural challenges facing beauty and grooming professionals, including inadequate education pathways and limited labor protections. Our mission is to advance beauty education reform and facilitate informed conversations about unionizing beauty workers—including cosmetologists, barbers, estheticians, nail technicians, and makeup artists—while conducting research on the beauty labor sector.
Vision
Beyond the Chair envisions a beauty and grooming industry with strong, accessible workforce infrastructure—where professionals have clear career pathways, equitable working conditions, and the collective capacity to shape the systems that impact their livelihoods. We seek to transform a historically fragmented sector into one that is coordinated, informed, and sustainable by strengthening education systems, expanding workforce development pathways such as apprenticeships, and increasing understanding of labor and industry structures. Our long-term vision is an industry where beauty professionals are not isolated workers, but active participants in a connected ecosystem that supports economic and educational mobility, leadership development, and long-term sector stability.
Goals
- 1.Beyond the Chair will build internal capacity by strengthening operations, partnerships, and systems needed to support sustainable growth. This ensures the organization can effectively serve as an infrastructure intermediary and expand its impact over time.
- 2.Beyond the Chair advances education as a core workforce strategy by increasing access to clear, research-informed information on training pathways, labor structures, and regulatory systems to support informed decision-making across the industry.
- 3.Beyond the Chair will build leadership and organizing training that helps beauty professionals strengthen their skills, deepen industry understanding, and participate in worker-led efforts to improve conditions and build a more connected, sustainable sector.
