The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
During the pandemic in 2020, NSALA adjusted protocols and developed innovative practices. NSALA rescue missions continued, bringing in more than 4,000 animals nationally and internationally, while keeping our staff, volunteers, the other shelters/rescuers, and the animals safe.
NSALA website and social media channels promoted the animals in our care and those coming in through our rescue efforts. Within the Adoption Center, counselors conducted adoptions by appointment only, and processed adoptions over the phone and via Zoom and Skype. Temperature checks were given to visitors entering the facility and all COVID-19 safety guidelines were adhered to. Virtual meet-and-greets were set up through Zoom so one or two pet candidates could be presented to each family. When coming to meet their pet, adopters were asked to wear masks and gloves, and limit time on campus. Cat adoptions were processed at our main reception desk providing extra distance, and we added Plexiglas barriers to the dog adoption booths. In both areas, communal items were constantly disinfected. All these efforts resulted in an average of 60-70 adoptions a week from mid-March through mid-June, and more than 600 animals found loving, responsible homes. Some of these adaptations will be here to stay. In the cat area, having preliminary discussions with prospective adopters has proven to be very effective in helping us make the right match.
Within our Pet Health Centers, we staggered appointment times for social distancing, and implemented curbside service to ensure the safety of the community. Virtual appointments were made available for non-emergency situations, where clients could connect with a veterinarian via webcam through the Activ4Pets online platform.
Protecting the social and emotional wellbeing of students was more vital than ever during this time, so we made the Mutt-i-grees Curriculum digital content free to teachers, students, and parents, and also expanded our range of remote offerings.
