The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
During this pandemic, Partners India’s goal has been to address three significant challenges that are affecting people in the most vulnerable areas where we serve.
India is facing a hunger crisis like it never has before. Even though the restrictions are easing, the lack of work for over three months has seen poverty levels spike drastically. We have been able to purchase food, in bulk, directly from farmers. We are then able to provide it to those who need it most.
Hospitals are still being overrun and are unable to keep up with patients. In the last few weeks, many critical patients from remote villages were treated by the doctors in our network. One of them, a young man who had a ruptured gallbladder, required an emergency surgery - which was done upon admittance. He is now recovering. We have formed an emergency medical task force with the providers who work with us regularly, volunteering a few hours every day. We have utilized sections of our buildings retrofitted for emergency care.
The daily wage laborers, comprising 90% of India’s workforce, are mostly migrant workers. These people moved to big cities from rural India with the hopes of a better life - are the ones affected the most during this crisis. Over the last year, India witnessed an exodus unlike anything seen since the 1947 partition, when 40 million migrant workers set off on foot to their villages, often hundreds of miles away.
There is, however, a positive side to the many people who are traveling home. They are skilled, trained laborers. Upon return, our community leaders have been meeting with the skilled laborers on the next steps to help them thrive at home.
By responding to the critical needs of the vulnerable by providing food and medical care, we are instilling hope. By having conversations with the returned migrant workers, we are instilling hope. We are confident that this can happen, thus ushering in the transformation in the areas we serve.
