The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
In response to the pandemic, ANW adopted a model of “responsive producing,” offering audiences a robust slate of virtual performances, panels, education programs, and events. Instead of our typical in-person subscriber season, we filmed our Spring 2021 season for audiences to stream from the comfort of their homes. Later that year, we were thrilled to invite audiences back to in-person to celebrate our 30th Anniversary Season, “They Shattered the Chrysalis!” We hosted our annual gala online, created an ongoing virtual panel series, and reimagined our education program for a distance-learning world. Our rapid response when the pandemic began set us up to facilitate even stronger distance-learning curricula moving forward, including video performances as well as virtual pre- and post-show workshops and discussions with teaching artists.
Finally, ANW used our time away from in-person performances to really focus our institutional efforts on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI). Among other things, we re-centered our strategic plan more squarely around anti-racism; our staff, board, and artists are meeting regularly to discuss the systemic changes we’d like to see implemented throughout every level of our theatre; and our EDI Task Force has been formalized as a permanent EDI Committee to help us better identify, prioritize, and address these issues at ANW (including representation, access, and education). As challenging as this time has been, it has also shown us the strength and resiliency of our organization, as we watched our staff adapt to remote work, artists and board members step up their involvement, and audiences go above and beyond to secure a stable future for ANW. We remain committed to producing high-quality artistic programming while being responsive to changing conditions in our community and around the world.
