Mission

Provide educational, cultural, and civic leadership, particularly regarding Jewish traditions and practice, Jewish communities in the Greater Augusta Region and elsewhere, and contemporary Jewish-related subjects including Israel, the Holocaust, and antisemitism. Educate the Greater Augusta Region about the area’s history, growth, and progress through the lens of contributions by Jewish individuals, businesses, and organizations. Support historic preservation by revitalizing two important nineteenth century buildings, one of which is the oldest standing synagogue building in Georgia, and by using these buildings to provide educational and cultural services. Promote national interest in the Greater Augusta Region, particularly regarding its history and its diverse and resourceful citizenry.

Vision

RESTORE this classic Greek Revival-style architectural gem to its former glory. ENHANCE the Telfair Street Cultural Corridor. PROVIDE a new tourist attraction to the ever-increasing number of visitors to Augusta, GA, Aiken, SC, and the rest of the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA). CREATE a fine venue for all types of social and cultural events. RECOGNIZE the important role of Jews in Georgia, South Carolina and Augusta Area’s history which is a story long ignored and suppressed in our history books. GIVE EVIDENCE of our personal thanks for the bedrock of Judaism in other religions and cultures. REMEMBER the six million innocent victims who perished in the Holocaust because of discrimination and acknowledge the establishment of the State of Israel.

Goals

1.AJM aims to restore the oldest synagogue in GA, the CCI Synagogue, into a Museum and Education Center. It will inspire and challenge people of all backgrounds in the Augusta, GA, and Aiken, SC areas.
