The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
Ronald McDonald House (RMH) Houston has adapted to capital expansions, hurricanes, weather/power emergencies, a global pandemic, social awareness of cultural sensitivities, and other influences that cause an organization to pivot and evaluate their operations. However, during these times of crisis, RMH Houston discovers creative ways to engage with our families, new opportunities for volunteers, innovative programs to recruit additional donors, and the staff’s capacity to embrace the situation in service of the mission. For example, RMH Houston has a long-standing partnership with the Houston Independent School District (HISD) to lead a K-12, one-room schoolhouse, at Holcombe House with a teacher assigned by the district. The teacher meets regularly with the families to discuss an educational plan and coordinates a schedule that works with the child’s medical treatment. RMH Houston was fortunate to have had the same teacher for the past couple of years who truly embraced our mission and led with the mantra, ‘Every child deserves an education.’ Unfortunately, due to the demands in HISD, RMH Houston’s teacher was set to be reassigned in the fall of 2023. Simultaneously, RMH Houston had assessed a need that HISD was not able to provide, i.e., a PreK program and teach the siblings of the patients staying at Holcombe House. Therefore, with the imminent teacher reassignment and the need for a PreK and sibling education, RMH Houston secured funding to create an Educational Specialist position and hire the teacher from HISD. With this new position, our Educational Specialist maintains the continuity of the programs she had established, engages with the current teachers assigned from HISD, and is recruiting new volunteers to address the special needs of the students and families. Our new Educational Specialist works with the Office of Advancement to solicit donations of STEM-related equipment for the classroom and schedules science fairs, graduations, and school pictures.
