The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
The 2020-21 Season presented a special opportunity to embrace Opera Colorado’s creative spirit. In lieu of mainstage productions - postponed to future seasons - we presented an innovative new series of digital and in-person performances that expanded our reach & raised voices within our community.
"The Trial of Susan B. Anthony" was a joint presentation with ADA Artist Management, Austin Opera, Berkshire Opera Theatre, San Diego Opera & Minnesota Opera. 2 digital programs were made with Rocky Mountain Public Media in Spring 2021. "The Promise of Living" was curated by soprano Laquita Mitchell, with baritone Nmon Ford & pianist Israel Gursky, highlighting the challenges, opportunities & successes of the Black experience. Using music, spoken word, & dance in partnership with Davis Contemporary Dance. "April in Paris" featured mezzo Catherine Cook in 3 whimsical episodes inspired by the golden age of television, including Lee Hoiby’s "Bon Appetit!," and a Paris cabaret singer for a performance of delightful French songs.
Live performances returned in May with "Canciones de Nuestras Tierras" - "Songs of Our Homelands" at Denver Botanic Gardens, exploring the rich tapestry of Latinx music & culture. Featuring soprano Cecilia Violetta López, baritone Luis Ledesma, pianist Nathan Salazar, Mariachi Sol De Mi Tierra, & ArtistiCO Dance Company performing baile folklorico , with musicians from the Opera Colorado Orchestra. We presented small concerts with our Artists in Residence; 2 performances of American Song at Hampden Hall at Englewood Civic Center, & 2 performances of Mozart & More at the University Club with members of the Orchestra & Maestro Ari Pelto.
We assembled a COVID-19 Taskforce in July 2020 of legal & medical experts who advised us in generating plans for safe workspace and rehearsal room protocols. We successfully returned to the Ellie Caulkins Opera House for our 2021-22 Season featuring performances of Tosca, The Shining, and our upcoming opera, Carmen.
